A Greater Manchester chippy has proved it’s far from small fry after scooping a national accolade. The Metro Fish Bar in Bury has been named one of the UK’s top 10 fish and chip shops by Seafish, the national authority on seafood. The Bury business fought off hundreds of contenders to be crowned as one of the best in the country as part of Seafish’s National Fish and Chip Shop of the Year 2009 competition.

The Metro Fish Bar will now go head to head with the nine other finalists to battle it out for the coveted title of Fish and Chip Shop of the Year 2009. The competition recognises the quality, value and choice offered by fish and chip shops across the UK and each of the top 10 competitors will now have to present themselves to leading industry figures. A number of industry-related topics such as sustainable sourcing, health and safety and maintaining product quality will also be considered as part of the judging process.

Nikki Hawkins, judge and competition project manager at Seafish, said: “The standard of entrants continues to increase each year and we are witnessing fish and chip shops paying an increasing amount of attention to sustainable sourcing as well as offering quality, value and choice. This industry has come a long way in 22 years and competition for the title only gets fiercer each year.â€?

The winner will be announced by celebrity chef Aldo Zilli at a glitzy ceremony at London’s Park Plaza Riverbank on January 21, 2010.
