AUGUST is truly the month of cakes, so it’s time to start making your baking plans for the Great Village Bake Off on Sunday 18 or the Great Bolton Bake-Off the following weekend.
The first contest is now in its seventh year, created by The Village Bakers, an LGBT social group inspired by BBC’s ‘Great British Bake Off’ who meet monthly to share homemade cake and wine. The venu is the Molly House pub on Richmond Street, start time 1pm.
Open to all levels of ability, there are three categories you can enter: Beginners Cupcake or Loaf Cake (sweet or savoury); LGBT Rainbow Showstopper (sweet or savoury that represents the LGBT Community); Community group or business.
This year’s judge is again Howard Middleton, who made it onto series four of the telly series and there are prizes for each category plus the chance to be crowned Star Baker. Bonus points for campness in our creations too.
The event is free to enter or attend but you need to pre-register for a ticket via www.villagebakers.lgbt.
The Great Bolton Bake-Off is a star event at the Bolton Food and Drink Festival organised by Bolton Council in association with Aldi, which takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend, from Friday, August 23 to Monday, August 26.
Baking contestant are asked to submit a design for a show-stopping cake that demonstrates their love of Bolton, using a minimum of one Aldi ingredient in the recipe.
There are three categories for entries: beginner, novice and professional. A selection will then be invited to produce and display their cakes in the family zone area in Crompton Place over the festival weekend.
Judges include TV’s Extreme Cake Makers star Rose Dummer, and award winning local cake artist Kay Gajra, pictured above with her James Martin tribute cake and the man himself at last year’s festival.
Amateur bakers of all ages can submit their ideas by emailing the festival team on [email protected] with their contact details, ability level and description of the cake. The deadline is August 2.
