THE LATEST: Manchester bistro Higher Ground named amongst World’s 50 Best Restaurants

20 July 2026 by Rhiannon Ingle

Much-loved Manchester bistro Higher Ground has landed a spot in this year’s World’s 50 Best Discovery, the global restaurant guide curated by the team behind the prestigious World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Led by chef Joe Otway alongside partners Richard Cossins and Daniel Craig Martin, the city centre favourite has been recognised as one of the standout dining destinations in this year’s edition.

It’s the latest accolade for the Manchester restaurant, which has gone from one of the city’s hottest openings to one of its most celebrated. Since opening its doors in February 2023, Higher Ground has picked up a Michelin Bib Gourmand and has featured in the National Restaurant Awards for four consecutive years.

The team’s story began back in 2020 with a pop-up before they went on to build their own farm, Cinderwood, and open acclaimed Ancoats wine bar Flawd in 2021. More recently, they added Bar Shrimp to the mix, a seafood-led cocktail bar sitting just next door to Higher Ground.

Joe Otway, Chef/owner of Higher Ground, said of the news: “We feel grateful to be acknowledged in any of these listings and awards; it’s a testament to the work our incredible teams put into practice every single day. And of course it’s all due to the constant support of the amazing community of guests that keep our wheels moving each week.”
