The Northern Quarter Street Party is coming!

5 April 2011

Fans of Victoria sponge cake, spam, cucumber sandwiches, Lindyhop, ‘40s fashion and cups of tea are in for a treat because, the Northern Quarter is set to play host to a brand new, all singing, all dancing Street Party.

Edge Street (and a bit of Oak Street) will be transformed into a 1940s-style bash with bunting, punch and sponge cake in abundance, not to mention stalls hosted by local bars and businesses and a magical fashion show to showcase the area’s bounty of independent and vintage boutiques.

As part of the retro package, Manchester Lindyhop Society are offering a swing dance lesson while a 40s-themed treasure hunt around the Northern Quarter will delight sleuths and Sherlocks alike. Music lovers are well catered for too. There will be a ‘busker’s bandstand’ featuring a mix of folk bands, magicians and other entertaining eccentrics, while local artists will showcase their work in a series of performances.

There are rumours of a ‘sing-off’ between two rival barbershop choirs as well as appearances from brass bands and string quartets. As the light fades visual projections will illuminate sets by Xfm’s Gareth Brooks and Murkage Cartel drawing this brilliant day out to a close.
