IN this democratic world where referendums can rule, People’s Choice Wine Awards are a natural progression from the rarefied prognoses of the industry experts.
This unique, consumer-friendly competition is not quite a straightforward vote from Joe (and Joanna) Public. Ordinary drinkers are involved in the first-round judging process; wines narrowed down to round two are judged by professionals including Kate Goodman (BBC Food and Drink presenter and owner of Reserve Wines, West Didsbury) and Amelia Singer (The Wine Show and Jamie’s Drinks tube).
This duo then hosted the gong-giving at The Comedy Store, Deansgate Locks. Now in their second year, the Awards attracted a 157 per cent increase in wine submissions, including those from supermarkets Waitrose, ASDA, Iceland and Aldi (winner of best supermarket category) as well as independent wine merchants, importers, and producers.
In truth it’s early days still with the same suppliers hogging the 20 shortlists for populist categories such as ‘Girls’ Night In’ , ‘Pizza Night Wine’ and ‘One Man and His BBQ’.
It’s all designed to make it easier for the average wine drinker to choose a decent bottle (or box), depending on the occasion or reason to match with food. All handled in a light-hearted way.
‘Girls’ Night In’ was won by Graham Norton’s Own Sauvignon Blanc 2018. The TV legend and genuine wine enthusiast even Tweeted his delight. Each of the winners received a limited edition signed cartoon created by Private Eye cartoonist Tony Husband. Full list here.
