TAKING Yule logs in a whole different direction down at Manchester’s latest new frontier, Sadler’s Yard, is this Christmas Tree, providing raw materials for the ‘people’s pub’, The Pilcrow.
The 11m high, 8 tonne bespoke installation above, was an attention grabber at the official Pilcrow launch, if you could tear yourself away from the pop-up bar run by Port Street, the free pizzas from Wood, Fire & Smoke and the various invitations to join workshops for dry stonewalling, beekeeping, robotics and (very recherché) creating ceramic beer pump handles.
The tree itself is an artisan product commissioned from leading Hungarian architects Hello Wood by NOMA to launch Manchester’s first new public square this century.
After Christmas it will be recycled and used by local volunteers to construct The Pilcrow by hand. Sturdy raw materials – the branches of the tree are formed of sawn logs stacked in a spiral formation around a conical base frame, using pine and oak.
Some of the material will be used as work benches, with other parts used for furniture, flooring, wall coverings and traditional pub games.
To find out more about this terrific community project – centrepiece of the up and coming NOMA neighbourhood – Taste of Manchester’s Lucy Lovell spoke exclusively to Joe Hartley, Head Maker at the Pilcrow Project.
