Vermillion set for £3m expansion

9 November 2010

East Manchester’s Vermillion restaurant is expanding – to the tune of £3 million. The Good Food Guide and Michelin-listed Vermilion & Cinnabar, adjacent to Sport City in Ancoats, has submitted plans to create one of UK’s largest banqueting suites with a capacity of up to 800 guests.

The kitchen will take its lead from the existing provision at Vermillion. Grilled Ocean Tiger Prawns caught by their own deep sea trawlers in the Bay of Bengal, flown directly to the plate accompanied by a spicy grated green papaya salad are an example of the house style. The project will create around 50 permanent new jobs in New East Manchester and the new hall will be designed by Miguel Cancio Martins, the hand behind Vermilion & Cinnabar’s lavish interiors.

Heading the Vermilion & Cinnabar operation – and masterminding the banqueting hall project – is Manzur Ahmed, son of Seamark founder Iqbal Ahmed OBE. Of the expansion plans, Ahmed, said: “There is a huge demand for a large banqueting hall in Manchester capable of accommodating the biggest and most lavish weddings. Because of the lack of appropriate space at Vermilion, we have been turning away increasing numbers of potential customers, who are seeking the Vermilion restaurant experience replicated for large-scale events.â€? He added that the company is working with Manchester City Council on the plans and hopes to gain planning consent before the end of 2010.
