With the huge amounts of new restaurants opening in Manchester, it’s easy to overlook the old favourites that have lined the streets for years. The Grill on the Alley has been serving traditional British food since 2006, priding itself on the specialist selection of steak.
Recently, Grill on the Alley raised the steaks with a new summer menu, and TOM went to sample some of their summer dishes.
Starters include torched mackerel with pickled vegetables, and smoked duck salad. Of the two, the mackerel came up trumps. The pickled veg were fresh and the sour tang cut through the fish beautifully.
For mains there's the option of sampling the famous Big Boy Cuts – a Grill on the Alley specialty – but be warned… these are BIG and juicy, and not for the feint hearted! Weighing in at a whopping 1200g, the beef is 100% pure bred and grass fed, with a marbled grain making it butter-soft and juicy.
TOM also recommends trying out some of the lighter dishes such as the incredible medium-rare tuna steak. The pink tuna steak is served with a delicious coleslaw, which has a fantastic horseradish punch.
For dessert TOM recommend the summer lemon posset - a brilliant balancing act of sweet and sour with a hit of zesty lemon and cream.
To top it all off, the wine list has had a summer makeover, with some wonderful wines featuring in their menu. The Tinpot Hut Syrah from Hawkes Bay, New Zealand is a beautiful addition, with a complex, longish finish and a subtle spiciness - it even won best in show and double gold at the San Fran international wine show.
