When one of the most popular restaurants in Manchester updates its menu, you take note. Its position at the top of King Street is fitting for the 'complete' dining experience offered. Rosso started out life under the guise of an Italian, and in its short life, it has become a go-to restaurant for those who want dinner to be about more than just the food.
Head chef Steve Hildebrandt has updated what was already a bold À La Carte. It mixes traditional Italiano with just enough eccentricities to keep both the curious and courageous coming through the doors. As the three-pieced old-timers were, no doubt, in their usual spot, the atmosphere was added to by a slightly younger crowd - probably drawn by the aura surrounding the place, and what a place it is. The Italian-themed cherry on the cake was provided by a suitably-attired baritone, serenading diners as he casually strolled among the tables.
Summer influences
There is a strong summer influence on the lobster, terrine and salt beef antipasti and a varied selection of salads. Head to mains, where pasta and pizza dishes take front row in summer terms. But there's plenty here for carne lovers. Bring a party of ten, really do, and all will be catered for. Try choosing between 32oz t-bone, rabbit fricasse or Ippoglosso, chefs pan-seared halibut (his personal recommendation) - it makes for an exciting pre-meal discussion. Just ensure one of you gets the lamb in pistachio crust.
For those with a (slightly) limited capacity, Rossos two course lunch is an absolute belter. £14.95 for a choice of starter and main, none of which be out of place elsewhere on the menu. Care to make it boozy? A bottle of the superb house is less than £8. The lunch menu changes every month, so dont be afraid to make it your weekly getaway.
As ever, the bar at the venue that's co-owned by Rio Ferdinand is stocked with a wide selection of wines and spirits to suit the most discerning guest. Five days a weeks there are £5 cocktails from 5-7pm - a nod to the owner and a great price for a drink in these surroundings. Rosso continues to do its position, at the summit of one of Manchesters most important streets, justice. Everything about it, from the interior to the friendly staff makes this place a winner.
