Hibernate has a prime spot in the city centre, offering cosy drinks to the Spinningfields drinker. Amid the pedestrianised frenzy of Hardman Square in winter, it's a friendly spot - perfect for after work drinks, or a leisurely lunch break. Skyscrapers may tower around but Spinningfields has come into its own recently, thanks to a focus on family friendly fun and new independents like Caffeine and Co, the nearby Mumma Schnitzel food cart and US soul food restaurant, Southern 11.
Speaking of soul food, Taste tried Hibernate's signature mulled wine and the house chilli on a recent visit. Both were excellent and very reasonable at under the £7 mark. Cocktails, meanwhile, are a significant draw. Running the gauntlet from hot toddies to Fig Old Fashioneds there's a festive take on martini, as well as some seriously alluring sparkling options.
The designers behind the award-winning chapel turned top end bar, Alma De Cuba in Liverpool have transformed the summery "In Bloom" bar into a kind of winter haven. Canny touches include lambskin, painted skulls, vegetation and bare, ski-chalet chic wooden beams. It's a winning combo, the allure lying in the contrast between the cosy, wood-decked interior and the ice rink in the centre of the square, the hubbub of the Christmas markets outside.
There's two sections to choose from: an intimate bar space, and a wider, more party-vibe style room complete with open fires to warm your hands around. Perfect for sharing a few kisses under the mistletoe.
