Three-room backstreet gem dating back to 1903, nickname The Lamp Oil, rescued by ex-Corrie star Rupert Hill and his Manchester pub-restoring pals (Castle, The Parlour) features a rare “log end” dartboard, ancient piano, a jukebox littered with classic albums, no TV, a cosy patio and uncompromisingly bitter ales from Holts. Food restricted to pies, but small wine list features outstanding, zesty kiwi sauvignon Moko Black (£17). Young landlady Esther Maylor is one of the best round .Not easy to find – Satnav recommended – but worth it, especially to catch a live gig in the adjacent performing space.
