Claudio and Emily opened the first branch of this Antipodean coffee bar in the Northern Quarter in 2014, and soon attracted a community of like-minded souls, passionate about great coffee and a great brunch.
This independently owned café offers Ozone Coffee, speciality teas, a selection of delicious brunch dishes, bagels and homemade cakes. And, because Claudio is originally from Portugal, they serve natas, those gorgeous custard tarts.
Open from 8am Monday to Friday (9am on weekends), breakfast is served until noon.
Try dark chocolate porridge with cinnamon and toasted almonds (£4.50) or an açai bowl with home made granola, berries and peanut butter banana sauce (£7).
Brunch is served all day and house specials include Emily’s banana bread with vanilla mascarpone (£4), or a very indulgent French toast with berry compte, white chocolate and almond crumble, whipped vanilla mascarpone and salted caramel (£8).
If you’re more into savoury brunches, try Turkish eggs or stacked cheddar corn fritters topped with bacon or smoked salmon.
As well as the aforementioned tea and coffee, Federal also serve a good selection of cocktails, beer, natural wine, fresh juices and soft drinks.
A second branch of Federal opened on Deansgate in 2019.
