Shortlisted for CAMRA’s National Pub of the Year in 2014, the Harewood is an object lesson in how to keep a village pub vibrant when all around are giving up the ghost. Current owners the Wild family rescued it from the dead hand ownership of Enterprise Inns, installing their Green Mill brewery, previously in Rochdale, in the basement. As a brewery tap it brings in the real ale checkers to sample some fine beers, notably 5.5% premium bitter Big Chief, which won gold at the 2014 SIBA national beer competition. Guest beers and a handpulled proper cider plus a fine range of continental bottled beers complete the drinks roster and there’s an affordable pub grub menu. Above all, it is a convivial community pub where despite the presence of an awesome jukebox locals of all ages can talk.
