Owned by Steve Piling, formerly of Sams Chop House, The Red Lion reinvents the gastro-pub with mahogany and velvet tones and textures out near Lyme Park. The Sunday lunch menu (although the a la carte and set are more than worth their salt) offers succour to fans of classic British cuisine. Go for slow cooked shoulder of pork, mashed potato, kale and parsley carrots or roast top rump of beef or leg of lamb with Yorkshire puddings, duck fat roast potatoes and gravy accompanied by seasonal vegetables (£16.95). Favourites like lemon posset and raspberries and sticky toffee are ideal after while the wine list rewards close inspection. Spicy Spanish red, Juan Gil Monastrell, is the perfect complement to a hearty Sunday lunch with friends or add a classy glass of Claret for £5. Around 30 minutes drive from Manchester city centre.
