Ice Skating & Winter Feasting at The Whitworth Scandi Frost Fair this December

11 November 2016

HYGGE’S everywhere at the moment. You pronounce this Danish ethos of cosiness and well-being ‘hue-ga’  and it’s big hugs all round for the Whitworth, which is hosting  a whole weekend evoking its spirit.

The Scandi Frost Fair runs over the first Saturday and Sunday of December, celebrating winter, arts, culture and togetherness, drawing inspiration from Scandinavia. Think big, colourful jumpers, hearty food, fire pits, the beauty of the Northern Lights (maybe leave out all those grim Scandi noir crime dramas)

In essence Hygge means to create a nice, warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life, in good company – the perfect description of the family-friendly Frost Fair. So what’s on offer?

As you are welcomed to the gallery’s free ‘Hygge-infused’ environment the sculpture court will be transformed into the ‘Ice Queen’s Courtyard’ in anticipation of an entertaining visual spectacle produced and performed by Salford-based arts troupe Walk The Plank (below, stoking up the fun at a recent festival).

In between performances there will be an ice rink for all ages to enjoy to keep the festive atmosphere going at all times, along with the best local craft ales from Cloudwater Brewery served up with a feast of international street food.

Clustered near to the gleaming Anya Gallacio, Ghost Tree sculpture (below) and alongside the newly extended gallery, you can enjoy mulled wine, hot chocolate, crafts and handmade gifts from Manchester Craft Mafia

Or take it easy and simply relax under cover with a hot cocktail and view the Northern Lights and Scandinavian film shorts projected in the Art Garden’s outdoor cinema.

Activities inside the Gallery are on offer throughout the weekend, offering  interactive spaces for all ages to enjoy. Activities will include everything from floristry, the big knit along, storytelling and Welly Walks for kids. To top it all off, be sure to stay until dusk to catch the Spectacular Firework display to mark the finale on the Sunday evening.

The Whitworth Art Gallery, Oxford Road, M15 6ER. Sat and Sun, Dec 3 and 4. 11am-7pm each day. Free.
