TASTE of Manchester doesn’t go big on interior design generally, though In recent months we have uttered the odd ‘Mwah!‘ at the lavish look of the likes of Sakana, Fazenda, Iberica and Tattu. Now we have another contender, out of the city, with a decidedly quirkier sense of chic.

The Alderley Edge dining scene, with its A-list factor, ought to boast drop dead gorgeous interiors but hasn’t until now with the bijou arrival of Tomfoolery at 34, open to the public by the end of July.

We dropped in for a soft launch meal, lured by eclectic stuff dished up by chef Brice Moore (below, left) at pop-up events over the past few months, notably the FridayFoodFights at Great Northern.

Brice is a chef who cooks indoor street food with a technique honed in stints at MIchael Caines and Manchester House. Now he finally has a kitchen of his own after the owners spent 18 tortuous months of developing the site, formerly a Chinese restaurant on London Road.

Quail with kimchi, fabulous parm truff fries and ox cheek mac and cheese were as good as ever and desserts were to die a lingering death for. Larger burger plates were a subtle world away from the dirty food leviathans that stalk the Northern Quarter. Meanwhile, the drinks offering was as decidedly bijou – a small selection immaculately chosen – as the rest of the fledgling operation.

But the immediate wow factor, once you get past the enigmatic street facade, was the outlandish mix and match decor, yoking retro and comic book in a marvellous mish-mash that out-Wonderlands Alice, the light-fittings alone worth the trip down the rabbit hole! Have a look at the gallery below...
