The Beeswing indie wine bar and kitchen is now open at Kampus

11 July 2022 by Deanna Thomas

Manchester’s latest wine bar has opened at the Kampus garden neighbourhood. Situated on the first floor above Nell’s at Kampus, The Beeswing has a terrace for outdoor drinking overlooking the gardens and canal, making it the perfect spot for a sun-trapped drink over the summer.

The new indie wine bar and kitchen is a partnership between wine expert Anna Tutton and chef Joe Maddock who managed to raise funds after a successful £25,000 crowdfunder. The Beeswing will offer guests an exquisite wine selection alongside a wide variety of delicious drink-friendly pinchos and small plates.

Among classic and low intervention wines, founder Anna Tutton (previously of Vin-yard at Hatch) is pouring hand-picked selections from Georgia, Lebanon and Greece, by the glass, carafe or bottle. The Beeswing also has an onsite shop meaning that guests can even take a bottle of their favourite wine home. There is also a fine wine list available if you ask…

Co-founder Joe Maddock (former owner of Pinchjos on Didsbury’s Burton Road) is serving up a selection of light dishes to eat alongside the wines. Influenced by Mediterranean and North African flavours, the menu will feature small plates, and bar bites including spiced hummus on focaccia; mackerel pate; and variety of pinchos.

“It’s always been our dream to open an all-day eatery that has that friendly, independent feeling you get from popping into your neighbourhood local,” says Joe. “We’re beyond excited to see that come to life.”

The Beeswing is the latest in a raft of other like-minded independent businesses at Kampus, the neighbourhood developed by CAPITAL&CENTRIC and HBD, including Nell’s New York Pizza and Bar and Pollen Bakery. They are soon to be joined by Yum Cha Dim Sum Kitchen, Madre’s Mexican Taqueria, Great North Pie Company, Cloudwater beer hall and a General Store.

“The Beeswing have got a great spot with their terrace overlooking the Kampus garden and it’s got a really relaxed vibe,” says Adam Higgins from property developers CAPITAL&CENTRIC. “It’s the perfect hangout for sharing a bottle over lunch in the sunshine or grabbing a post-work bite to eat with mates, rolling into the evening when candles are lit and the lights go down.

“Our residents will also be able to grab a bottle on their doorstep with Kampus’ own wine shop. The community at Kampus is becoming something pretty special and we can’t wait for more places to open over the summer.”

The Beeswing is open Weds & Thurs (12-11pm), Friday & Saturday (12-12pm) and Sunday (12-7pm) with a DJ on the last Sunday of the month. Food is served until 9pm.
