The Real Greek opens its first northern branch in Manchester’s Corn Exchange

14 December 2021 by Deanna Thomas

The Corn Exchange is now an undisputed one stop destination for global cuisine. You can get almost anything there from pizza to pho and, believe it or not, even BBQ with a side of cricket

The Real Greek is the latest venue to open there, taking over the site formerly occupied by Wahaca with 130 covers inside the restaurant with a further 35 seats available in the covered forecourt and 35 outside.

The Real Greek Manchester will be the first northern branch for the brand which has over 20 branches, mostly in London, but also in cities including Bristol, Bournemouth, and Norwich.

They offer typically Greek and Mediterranean dishes at reasonable prices. Their signature souvlaki wraps come with a variety of meaty fillings including Loukaniko sausage or lamb meatballs, to vegetarian halloumi or falafel. There’s even a vegan version with jackfruit gyros and vegan aioli all in wrapped up in gorgeous flatbread with chips inside, plus homemade tzatziki, fresh tomatoes, red onion and sweet paprika.

Graze your way through a selection of cold mezze including classics such as hummus and taramasalata together with dishes from the hot meze such as TRG’s signature falafel, dolmades or calamari. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Greek restaurant without a decent moussaka.

The filoxenia dinner, available from 5pm Sun-Thurs, is a great value way to try a few different dishes with four for £13.95. Greek desserts including sweet and sticky baklava and Bougatsa, a traditional filo pastry filled with custard cream from Sérres, North Greece.

The wine list offers many interesting red, white and rosé Greek wines including Assyrtiko, the most well-known Greek grape as well as bottles from Thessaloniki and the region of Halkidiki. As you’d expect, they also stock plenty of retsina, ouzo, metaxa and tsipouro– the Greek version of grappa.

Managing Director Nabil Mankarious said, “It is an honour to open our 22nd restaurant and our first site in the North. Manchester is a popular and buzzing city with a trendy food and drink scene, so we’re delighted to now have a presence, offering our authentic Greek food to a new clientele.

“We’ve been very fortunate to continue to thrive, with a sustained demand for our business, and being able to continue to open more sites across the country”.

The Real Greek will operate with “click and collect” takeaways from 13th December and their dishes will be available on delivery platforms from early January 2022.
