Toast Negroni’s centenary with a classic Italian film double bill at YES

31 January 2019

NEGRONI as a liquid ‘soundtrack to two classic Italian movies sounds an attractive scenario to ToM’s resident aficionados of this classic Campari-based cocktail.

It seemed appropriate when one of the team visited Sicily’s glorious coastal gem Cefalù to order a Negroni at a seafront cafe, overlooking the instantly recognisable setting for Giuseppe Tomatore’s Cinema Paradiso.

That’s part of Above The Line’s definitive double bill, along with Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves (1948) at the FORZA Negroni Festival at YES on Sunday, February 10. Any excuse – it’s a treat-packed 100th birthday celebration of the Negroni.

The (contested) back story has Count Camillo Negroni in Florence’s Caffè Casoni demanding that bartender Fosco Scarselli strengthen his Campari and vermouth cocktail with gin rather than normal soda water.

It wouldn’t be a party without some appropriate street foo. Lupo Caffè will be there, Little Orange Co will provide the arancini with specials dished out from YES’s in house pizzeria Pepperoni Playboy. We’re also promised an opera singer to serenade you and your Negroni.

Sun Feb 10, FORZA Negroni Festival at Yes, 38 Charles Street, Manchester M1 7BD. 12pm-6pm, free entry.
