A new street food night market is coming to Manchester this summer

20 May 2022 by Deanna Thomas

A night market is coming to the KAMPUS neighbourhood next month as independent food traders kick-start the garden neighbourhood’s summer celebrations.

Opening from 6-10pm on Thursday 9 June, the night market will see Little David Street buzzing with a range of artisan brands lined up all the way up the garden. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the perfect laid-back summer evening of food, drink and music.

Street food vendors will include Just Natas (@just_natas), selling their traditional Portuguese custard tarts, Osaka Local (@osakalocal.mcr) dishing up Japanese street food, and Bon St Local (@bonstreetfood), serving their Afro Brit hot eats.

Visitors will also be able to browse and buy work from local print artists and a indulge in creations from the Witch Kinds Rum (@witchkingsrum) cocktail bar, all set to live music.

The night market is part of the successful collaboration between KAMPUS and Ancoats Pop-Up, whose market on the last Sunday of every month already draws thousands to the area. More summer night markets will take place on Thursday 14th July, 11th August and 15th September opposite Manchester’s Canal Street.

“This is our first ever night market and we’re chuffed to be bringing something new to Manchester’s thriving independent scene,” says Alice Longson, of Ancoats Pop-Up. “The KAMPUS garden is a hidden oasis, it’ll be the perfect place to spend a really chilled evening sampling some of the city’s best street food indies and supporting artisan makers. Our monthly weekend markets have proved a hit at KAMPUS and this is a lovely, limited run for the summer to showcase our city’s best creatives on the, hopefully warm, summer nights.”

The rental community developed by Capital&Centric and HBD has plenty of things going on this summer. Visitors to the night market will also be able to visit the current collaboration between Cloudwater and Levanter, part way through their residency at the Bungalow and garden. They can also pop into Nell’s New York Pizza and Bar which is proving a major draw for the area.

Summer Beer Thing, a three-day festival of seasonal, regional and interesting beers from around the world, will also take-over the garden from Friday 24 June – Sunday 26 June.

“This summer feels like a real celebration at KAMPUS,” says Adam Brady, of HBD. “It’s our first proper summer without social distancing restrictions and we’ve a massive programme of pop-ups, events, exhibitions and openings. With our residents now fully immersed in neighbourhood life, it’s brilliant to be adding more to the experience of what it’s like to live here, as well as become one of the must-visit destinations in Manchester.”

Kampus is a collection of old and new buildings, right next to the famous Canal Street in Manchester’s Gay Village and just minutes from Piccadilly Station. The community is set to become home to some of the North West’s most exciting independent brands, with the likes of Pollen Bakery, the Cloudwater Brewery Beer Hall, Yum Cha Dim Sum Kitchen, Beeswing and Great North Pie all planning to open in the coming weeks.
